Edmonton Wargamer's Group - December 17th - game night - After Actions Report

Edmonton Wargamer's Group - December 17th - game night

Rules: Crossfire
Players: Chen-song (British forces) and myself (German Fallschirmjagers)

The game was an introductory game for Chen-song as he said he's heard about Crossfire but hasn't played it. I was thankful to run the game as I have to dust the cobwebs off my brain as I hadn't played Crossfire for a while.

British launched an assault from the West upon the destroyed village of Ambreville with the objective to seize two of the three houses at the crossroads. Heavy hedgerows, forests and orchards provided cover for the infantry but were obstacles for the pair of sherman tanks that were to be used as support.

First (Red) Company made a push to the south of the village. 1st platoon was immediately caught in some woods where they were pinned/suppressed by German MG42 fire.
2nd platoon was able to flank further to the South and brought some fire upon the entrenched Germans, killing a squad of Germans.

The Germans were able to extricate themselves and take up a secondary defensive position. Emboldened by the German retreat, 3rd platoon pushed for the village where they were caught by a crossfire from one of the houses in the village and a 2nd MG42 set up in a hedgerow South of the village.
It was then that the British heard the rumbling of an engine coming from the centre of the village and to a Sherman gunners delight, the Panzer IV rolled into his gun sights. Boom! The Panzer IV was knocked out.

The British commander decided that 2nd (Blue) Company had had their fill of tea and ordered them forward and to make a move directly east towards the village. 4th platoon entered some woods and began a long firefight with a 3rd Geman MG42 team supported by a squad of infantry. 4th Platoon had a Vickers HMG attached and they were able to wipe out the German defenders in the hedges.

4th Platoon pushed forward to seize the hedgerow for cover. A 4th German MG42 opened up from the cover of the house and after sending 5th platoon into the hedge to try and hold it the British fell back. The cost was just too high.

6th Platoon was sent to attack the village from the North. They took fire from a German infantry platoon to the North but they pressed into the woods and formed an effective firing line pouring fire into the German strong point. A Sherman even rumbled forward and crashed through the hedge to intimidate the German defenders.

With all this firepower the German strong point was reduced to a single suppressed squad. 3rd Platoon from the Company to the South was ordered forward and assaulted the house. Despite being outnumbered and suppressed, the Germans were veteran fallschrimjagers and they beat off the British assault.

6th Platoon, the heroes who had poured effective fire into the strong point from the North began to move into a position where they could launch their own assault upon the strong point. But the German platoon to the North had them in their sights and shot up two squads. A sherman was sent North to help 6th Platoon but he became bogged in the woods as soon as he entered. 6th Platoon opted to pour fire into the house and killed off the last German squad defending it.

It was at this point that we called the game. A quick maneuver by the British put a British squad into the 2nd house and the fallschrimjagers decided enough blood had been spilled.

OUTCOME

10 of 22 British squads were casualties, the two sherman tanks survived.

7 of 14 German fallschrimjagers were casualties, the lone Panzer IV was destroyed.

Thanks again Chen-song for trying out Crossfire. See you at the game table next year.
